We all have a totem. An object that we like to have within reach and that says more about us than we might think. From one home to another, from adventure to adventure, it’s this one piece – and only this one – that we can’t bear to be apart from. Attracted by this host of possibilities, designers of all persuasions made this work charged with history their obsession in 2018. Baroque, primary, graphic: totems are omnipresent. You may remember that last year The Socialite Family revealed the extraordinary world of artist Nicolas Lefebvre to you. Raising totemism to an art form via its assembly, this artisan of dreams took us to a hitherto unseen place in space and time. One of shared dialogue with time as redemption. Recognisable by their singular form and their strange look of a family, these totems give off a vibrant energy. Like the one created in previous years by Ettore Sottsass. A true illustration of the Italian master’s crazy imagination, these colourful sculptures, ranging from the bookcase to the collection of ceramics, have left an indelible mark on our minds. And because today more than ever, the trend is for self expression through one’s decoration, how can we not mention the very essence of the totem. Namely, an “Animal (or plant) considered to be the ancestor and the protector of a tribe, object of particular taboos or duties.” When you look at the following images you can’t avoid seeing that the personalities presented on The Socialite Family have something to say to you on this matter.
