With an awareness of the challenges facing independent designers everyday, Mark and Suzan actualised their perceptions into a concept, CrowdyHouse. Launched in 2013, the platform dedicated to objects for the home is one of the most selfless and innovative notions in the market today. The purpose was to allow independent and creative designers to sell their wares directly to consumers without intermediaries. The use of lower commissions brings to the foreground the concentrated ideas and projects of each designer whilst benefitting the customer with it’s limited productions. CrowdyHouse is for those appreciating both honourable craft and shrewd design. Another aspect to mention is the history of each product and brand heritage that comes with it. CrowdyHouse has an extra special something, spreading magical stories from home to home, around the world. It’s a humane and artistic adventure sure to be followed closely.

Mark, Suzan, how did the idea for CrowdyHouse come about ?
Mark was previously the Editor-in-Chief of Archello. Whilst working there he met and spoke with numerous designers who were encountering strife in selling their designs online and making a fair profit. At the same time, Suzan was making furniture and struggling to find channels where she could launch and sell her furniture. We both identified the struggles for professional independent designers to sell their work from both sides and decided to do something about it. For 6 months we worked nearly every weekend designing and building the website. The idea was to be the platform where designers could ‘premiere’ their designs. We launched CrowdyHouse in October 2013 with 15 designers at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. We became the curated marketplace that you see today after participating in the Rockstart Accelerator program in Amsterdam in 2014. This business accelerator helped us refine our model and put together a strong team growing CrowdyHouse into what you see today.
Why the name CrowdyHouse ?
The name CrowdyHouse is a combination of crowdy and house. We are firstly a launching platform, inspired by crowdfunding, this is the crowdy part. We only wanted to focus on designers that produced items for your home, this is the house part.
Who is your customer ?
Our customers are design lovers. They appreciate craftsmanship but also original and thoughtful design. We have many customers who have just bought a house and want to fill it with unique and authentic pieces. Many of the designs on CrowdyHouse have a great story behind them and our customers love telling their friends these stories when they visit their homes.
Where do you find the designers that you work with ?
We have three methods of discovery. Firstly, many designers apply to join CROWDYHOUSE through our request to sell page. These designers mostly discover us through word of mouth. Secondly, we have a team of scouts who are constantly checking popular design blogs and magazines throughout Europe to discover the best talent. Thirdly, we visit many design events. We will be going to Milan Design Week this year for example and are partnering with Ventura Lambrate, the biggest independent designer event.
How do you want to develop the business ?
This year we are focusing on building more services that help designers sell all over the world. This means logistics, translations, invoicing and connecting to retail partners throughout Europe. Our mission is to become the one solution that gives independent designers and makers the scalability to reach the bigger brands currently beneficial to them.
Are there any desires to create an in-house collection by CrowdyHouse ?
At this time our focus is 100% on helping the independent designers and makers.
