The name of this tiny shop tucked near Bayonne’s cathedral says it all: “Light Me Up.” A carefully curated treasure trove where you’ll always find a little something to gift before wandering the city’s narrow lanes.

Before you ask: yes, it’s really called that (“The Bookshop on the Sloping Street”). We love getting lost among its well-stocked shelves, but the best part is its selection: plenty of feminist titles (but not only), plus a playful “surprise” system where you choose a book based on a theme without seeing the cover. Refreshingly clever.

This spot is quickly becoming a Basque staple. After Biarritz, pastry chef Mathieu Turonnet has opened in Bayonne, offering a pretty view of Petit-Bayonne’s colourful facades. Don’t miss the “entremets noisette” — crisp, soft, and already a house classic.
