Maria de la Orden and Jérôme Baril

Concurrently with her work for Who’s Next, the smart Maria de la Orden made Madrid, her homeland, the cradle of her brand Mau Loa. “The eternal journey” in Hawaiian. They are timeless cuts, based on the craftspeople work and specialties from all around the world, for a fair contribution. This desire to constantly discover things is very present in the apartment where she lives with Jérôme, her partner. Chosen for its obvious advantages – we cannot find the adjectives to describe the glassware -, the space has a pure light, almost constant, which glorifies the slightest piece of flooring. Maria and Jérôme are aware of this potential. In order not to let anything take up too much space, the lovers even regularly change the decoration, which is always not very fussy, not to say minimalist. Maybe a discrete nod to the 50’s they love for their straight and geometrical lines. Who knows. Before their next trip, The Socialite Family slipped within the walls painted by the artist Catherine Pierra Rossi, Jérôme’s mother. A report just like the hosts of the day: bright.

Maria, Jérôme, what do you do for a living?

Maria

I work for Who’s Next, a company which organises international events for the fashion professionals. My missions are to discover prêt-à-porter creative novelties in Paris and abroad, such as young talents, established brands, and to manage the relations with the customers we already have. In parallel, I launched my brand of clothes and accessories,Mau Loa, two years ago. It is a small family business.

Jérôme

I have nothing to do with fashion: I am a management consultant in finance, and I’d like to become an electronic music producer, why not, some day.

How long have you been living in this apartment?

Maria et Jérôme

We moved in almost one year ago!

What pleased you the most when you moved in?

Maria et Jérôme

We’d say, with no hesitation, the big bay window, the great volume in the living room, and the light, which is very important to us.

Maria, how would you define your style in terms of decoration? And in terms of fashion?

Maria

I am not able to name a precise style. It changes with time and is often influenced by trips. I could answer an eclectic decoration, a mix between vintage and contemporary. I don’t exclude anything and I adapt it to my taste and personality. In fashion, I am always classical and simple. I like to mix a masculine wardrobe with very feminine clothes, and I use a lot of accessories which differentiate my look most of the time! A lot of hats, loafers, sunglasses… and of course bags! But I am not afraid of taking risks with extravagant pieces.

Where do you go when you are looking for furniture?

Maria

What I like most is going to second-hand stores, hunting for antiques, in Madrid, getting some great bargains online, and mixing my treasures with more design pieces. I think of my golden lamps Gropius Lamps, brand designed by one of my friends.

And the inspiration for your creations?

Maria

During my trips! Everything started from a trip in Peru with my family. After we went to Mexico, Guatemala and very recently to India! But I also get inspiration from “street culture”, from art and even decoration.

Is there a design period which particularly inspires you?

Maria et Jérôme

The 50’s: straight and geometrical lines… Pierre Guariche well defines the types of furniture we love: pure and smart. But in a different and more recent style: the group Memphis with its extravagant forms and bright colours. One of our favourite designers in this group in Ettore Sottsass. We are dreaming of the Ultrafragola mirror.

What is missing in your home?

Maria

The list is long… A great bookcase, Robert Adams’ photographs and a pair of velvet stools (I have already spotted them at Conran Shop!)

Jérôme

A dressing room twice as big for Maria’s wardrobe, and a chimney!

Would you recommend us a restaurant in Paris or elsewhere?

Jérôme

In our neighbourhood, there is Papillon. In the 11th arrondissement, Septime and its wine cellar.

Maria

Tough question, there are so many of them! In Madrid, I recently discovered Bistronomika, a small restaurant in which they focus on seafood with a Peruvian fusion touch. And, if you have the chance to go to Lima, don’t miss Maido with its Nikkei cooking with a Japanese influence, or La Mar, Gaston Acurio’s restaurant.
