Laure and Florent are almost religious in their passion for design. Knowledgeable and erudite on the topic, they can spend hours talking about interior decoration. Styles, eras, and materials are part of their everyday experience. The trained architects continue to search high and low for the perfect item. Their apartment is overflowing with design landmarks, rare objects and cult items. You could compare them to curators. Certainly, Laure offered no resistance! With her acute sense of good design, she set up in the business of selling furniture and interior decorations for children’s bedrooms. Her store, Millimètres, offers a unique selection of pieces that come from Scandinavian countries – an eclectic selection that’s not to be missed.

Laure, where did this passion for decoration come from?

Laure

As far back as I can remember, I moved the furniture in my bedroom and in the living room on Wednesdays. At the age of 14, we went on holiday to visit a friend of the family – an architect – who had created a very sparse, minimalist interior with extremely astute references in the highly traditional outbuildings of the family château! It was like a bolt from the blue, a revelation.

What is your educational background?

Laure

I started studying international business and, after an internship with a company left me feeling depressed, I decided to do what I’d always been passionate about: art history and decoration. So, I went back to school at the École du Louvre, specialising in the history of 19th century furniture, then studied interior architecture at the GRETA Adult Education Centre at the École Boulle.

Which designer are you most passionate about?

Laure

Seeing as I have to choose, Florence Knoll! Solidarity with a fellow woman, because we are quite rare in our profession. I love absolutely all her designs.

Florent

Poul Kjaerholm.

Which piece do you dream of owning one day?

Laure

Boyer’s X-shaped leopard-print stool, Carlo Nason’s Murano glass Lotus lamp, and Lucia Mercer’s marble pedestal table: one of the most beautiful 80s designs!

Florent

Poul Kjaerholm’s PK 25 fireside chair and Hans Wegner’s Peacock chair.

Which low-priced piece are you most proud of?

Laure

A Talon wall lamp that I bought via Le Bon Coin.

Florent

The Revox wood and brushed aluminium tape player that I found in the street: my dream hi-fi design concept.

Could you name an essential interior design address?

Laure

One of the hottest destinations for twentieth century furniture, at least from my perspective, is Galerie Christine Diegoni in the 18th arrondissement of Paris.

Florent

And the flea markets in Marseilles. There are lots of great pieces at reasonable prices amid all the chaos and scents of the market.

How did you choose your children’s names?

Laure

Leo’s names comes from my grandmother – Leontine – whom everyone called Leo and who was a dancer at the Moulin Rouge in the 20s. The story behind Stanislas is much weirder: to focus our search for a name, we decided that his name had to contain the letter ‘L’ like our own. In a chance conversation with my sister, she told me that Louis de Funès was called Stanislas in “La Grande Vadrouille.” The name is a nod to the comedian, to the orchestra conductor and, by extension, to Stanisław of Poland, father-in-law to Louis XV, won us over.

Could you recommend a restaurant to us?

Laure

Le Cherche-Midi! An amazing Italian restaurant that has been open since 1978; a refined, bistro atmosphere.
