With radiant skin, light-coloured eyes and an aristocratic allure, Charlotte Balme could be an actress. An incarnation of the true modern woman, Charlotte is the “Parisienne” who inspires The Socialite Family. We went to see her in her apartment-workshop where she creates collections for her brand Yvonne Yvonne. Perfectly designed bags with unique prints. After a year of hibernation, Charlotte has come back all guns blazing with a hessian print bag – her flagship model! And this is not to displease us since we are proud to present some of his models in our ephemeral shop at 30, rue du Vertbois. To discover without delay.

Charlotte, what do you do?

Charlotte

I created Yvonne Yvonne, a brand of essential products using timeless leather and brand-new types of printed hessian, available exclusively online, and soon in the showroom office in Paris.

What education have you had with regard to interior design?

Charlotte

A fairly traditional one! My father’s side of the family sees their furniture as the centre of their apartment’s decoration, and believes that nothing should be thrown away. My mother follows her instincts a little more, and is known for impulse buys! I feel like I have characteristics from both sides. I refuse to get rid of my grandmother’s old wardrobe, even though it’s completely broken, and at the same time I’ve just bought a set of brass coat hooks even though I don’t have room for them…

How do you transmit a taste for beauty and fine materials to your son?

Charlotte

By making it something natural, fun and varied, so everyone can join in and decorate the home. I preselect everything, but I let him choose his posters, sheets, etc. I don’t know if that gives him a taste for beauty, but at least it teaches him to be curious and have self-confidence.

Can beautiful décor go hand in hand with family life?

Charlotte

Absolutely (my son has just ripped the poster above his bed…). You do have to have a few rules for when they’re between one and three. This time can be catastrophic if you don’t put ornaments high enough, if you leave pens lying around, or unframed posters… Nothing should be too fragile. Children need to grow up without the pressure of being told “no” every five minutes. But that doesn’t stop you having beautiful décor!

What works, objects and furniture do you prefer in your apartment?

Charlotte

Our Saarinen table, which also serves (too much) as my desk, and the giant photo of a bridge in Alaska from my son’s godfather, Antoine Wagner.

Where do you feel the happiest?

Charlotte

On my bed. It’s a little cocoon with a view of my cabinet of curiosities and the Amazonian arrows my step-father brought back from South America.

What is missing from your apartment?

Charlotte

A large dressing room, cupboards everywhere, and I’d love a second sofa, but this time in faded pink velvet.

Can you give us some décor advice?

Charlotte

As a Parisian, I’m used to small spaces. You shouldn’t think twice about putting in huge furniture, carpets, sofas, lamps etc. to make the room look bigger. If you only put in small furniture to try and have more space, you get the impression the space is tight.

Which restaurant in Paris or elsewhere would you recommend?

Charlotte

Le Poutch, on Rue Lucien Sampaix in the 10th arrondissement. Everything there is fresh, cooked on site. It’s beautifully decorated and a perfect place to drink Chai while working.

Two décor addresses online or in Paris?

Charlotte

For porcelain products online visit LampandCo and Le Beau est Mien. Visit Little Cabari for soft, printed sheets.
