The highlight of Autumn 2022, the twelfth edition of Paris Design Week, is here, and this year is exploring the boundary between the tangible and the intangible. The real and the virtual. Raising questions about the position of design in the era of the Metaverse – a theme addressed in parallel by the Maison & Objet show – the French-speaking and international stakeholders in this design week offer different keys to understanding this dialogue between craftsmanship and digital. By bringing them together rather than focusing on the differences between them. And to showcase the results of this reflection around two potentially antagonistic worlds, The Socialite Family invites you to rediscover Paris as you make your way around these four exhibition spaces where experimentation is king. A refreshingly intriguing route for you to follow from 8 to 17 September!
1. The “Fragments” Collection from Anthony Guerrée, and available from “M éditions” at Maison La Roche by Le Corbusier. 8-10 Sq. du Dr Blanche, 75016 Paris 2.The Isabelle Stanislas Exhibition at the Hôtel de Sully. Entrance at 5 Place des Vosges and 48 Rue Saint-Antoine (75004). 3. Psychoanalysis of a piece of four-legged furniture. The Exhibition of French Furniture by Vincent Darré at the Hôtel de la Monnaie. 11 Quai de Conti, 75006 Paris. 4. Paris Design Factory Week at l’Espace Commines, from 9 to 18 September. Access at 17 Rue Commines (75003). 5. The Socialite Family’s Paris shop welcomes you to 12 Rue Saint-Fiacre (75002) to explore its new Autumn back-to-work collection: Manifesto.
1) What if we revisit our classics to start this route? The Socialite Family’s starting point is the Maison La Roche, based in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. The first architectural demonstration of Le Corbusier’s genius – built in 1923 for the art collector Raoul La Roche – where the creations of a designer were displayed for the first time. The mineral designs of Anthony Guerrée – future artistic director of Habitat – are inspired by the three ancient architectural orders – Ionic, Doric and Corinthian – to shape the stone, from travertine to marble. Produced by the Marbreries de la Seine and published by “M éditions”, these functional objects of pure aestheticism are gathered in a collection called “Fragments“. A chaise longue – a tribute to the emblematic LC4 chair -, a pocket tray and even a stool punctuate the spaces of the modernist visionary, thus establishing a correspondence between craftsmanship and architecture.
2) Our second stop on this tour is the Hôtel de Sully. In the orange grove of this 17th century residence, the interior architect and designer Isabelle Stanislas offers an architectural stroll through the gardens and covered spaces. As an extension of this interior installation – where an interplay of mirrors is established with a masterful sofa as the central piece – the Parisian continues her creative approach by showing three modular structures outside. Wooden pieces which – once assembled – form a one-storey house, nomadic and without foundations, which displays on its bare walls the photographs of Fabien Desgroux – photographer and friend of the exhibitor. Inside and outside thus merge together to offer a global and sensorial experience. By proposing to push the sense of detail to the sound universe of this exhibition: a warm musical atmosphere composed by the sound designer Hyperstellar.
3) We head to the Left Bank for our third stop at the Hôtel de la Monnaie de Paris. A detour to the other side of the Seine to rediscover the volumes of this institution which brings together – for the duration of this design week – the creations of a dozen crafts. True flagships of our national craftsmanship – united within the French Furnishing Federation – these cabinetmakers, ironworkers, upholsterers and bronzeworkers are exhibiting the fruits of their labour under the guidance of the whimsical Parisian decorator Vincent Darré, who is behind this hushed scenography. Called “Psychoanalysis of a four-legged piece of furniture”, this installation, which has the air of a curiosity cabinet, retraces the creation process of each object and shows the wide spectrum of expertise of French manufacturers. Prowess of meticulousness and finesse with ancestral techniques that are constantly being reinvented.
4) The Espace Commines is an essential part of this annual tour, once again revealing to the general public the results of the research of the young generation of designers. Always on the lookout for more eco-conscious production techniques for desirable creations, the exhibitors at 17 rue Commines are once again vying with each other in their imagination to astound even the most seasoned eye. From the recovery of shell waste – collected in Brittany – into a recycled material similar to Ostrea’s terrazzo, through the work of wood and weaving by the designer Matang and his use of natural dyes from dyeing plants, the object becomes a subject of environmental reflection while reconciling aestheticism. It’s surprising!
5) The last stop on this Parisian itinerary is at 12 rue Saint-Fiacre in The Socialite Family boutique, which is taking advantage of the start of the new school year in 2022 to get a new look! With its freshly repainted facade in a deep bottle green and its 175 m2 designed like an Italian flat housing the latest additions to our Manifesto collection, this showcase is the place to be for decoration lovers. The Aldo family sofa, the Tubo steel light and the Leopardo animal rug: the timeless creations of our design studio will appeal to design lovers and novices alike, whether they are looking for inspiration or want to complete their interior design with a few strong pieces!
