JJ Martin didn’t originally hit it off with Milan. However, it’s worth remembering that 16 years ago, the capital of the Lombardy region was regarded very differently from how it is seen now as a flamboyant, key location. Although the American was initially reluctant to integrate, she soon decided to grab life in the city with both hands. In time, she made it her own, even venturing to incorporate elements of its many treasures, including the elegant Milanese sciùra so symbolic of the sophisticated Northern Italian lifestyle. JJ Martin is inexhaustible when it comes to her major obsession – vintage – and decided to write about her experiences as both a journalist and expat on her website. Her content went viral and the platform became the main place to find the perfect guide to the city. One written by its inhabitants. Her husband then added his exquisite taste and great ambition to the mix, encouraging her to sell her impressive fashion collection online. La DoubleJ was born. Its brochure format still sets it apart. It took JJ Martin 18 months to bring this unusual sales method to fruition, with the first clothes designed in collaboration with silk maker Mantero. She dug through the brand’s archives to modernise old styles and impose her own style with simple designs in original prints and bright colours. Last April, a line was launched. La DoubleJ machine was officially in action. This cornerstones of this spontaneous, desirable and undeniably Italian brand are the original items which have created its reputation but also – and above all – the personality of its founder. We interview the most American woman in Milan at home in the centre of the city which has taught her everything – even how to cook!
I love the dress she is wearing! The style is superb.
